Buttered biscuits like golden baubles lined a basket at one of the quaintest brunch spots in Coastal Virginia. The Bee & The Biscuit planted itself in Pungo in June, and boy is it here to stay. If the garden entrance isn’t enough of a welcoming for you, the wrap-around porch will surely make you feel right at home for a good ol’ brunch. Bennies, toast varieties and even açaí bowls grace the menu, but I’m sure you’re more concerned if its moniker delivers.
A pal and I met for brunch, and while we ordered some tasty items, only time would tell before I ordered the biscuit basket. Warm, fluffy biscuits the size of hockey pucks were delivered with homemade strawberry jam, mango jam and the silkiest honey butter.
An iced latte was delivered in a mason jar, of course, while conversation was as rich as the endless amounts of butter and jam slathered on the biscuits. Before I knew it, brunch met our table.
My friend was drawn to JJ’s Eggs Benedict with thinly sliced, savory country ham and the same fluffy buttermilk biscuits we met in the baskets, swimming in a hollandaise spiked with a hint of spice.
While benedicts are my go-to brunch order, I had to make my rounds among the menu. Papa’s Breakfast Tostada was topped with black beans, avocado chunks and other spicy bits. Salty, crispy pork pieces mingled with each bite, while fresh fruit balanced the fiesta on my plate.
As we exited the porch through the garden and passed beneath the white arch, it’s safe to say The Bee & The Biscuit is a brunch oasis.
