Who says a woman can’t play golf in heels? High-energy music roars down the open-air bays as the lights glare from the outfield while I take my first hit. Once one of Topgolf’s micro-chipped golf balls dispenses, I take my best shot, aiming for one of the several illuminated, prismatic targets on the fairway. The touch-screen TV lights up, rating me on accuracy and distance before I’m awarded with points.
As the 24th location of the Topgolf franchise, the 65,000-square-foot facility is equipped with three floors offering 102 climate-controlled hitting bays with a touch-screen TV in each, a couple hundred televisions and a KidZone with pool tables, an Xbox One and other games.
Depending on the time of day, you pay a fixed rate per hour for up to six people to play in a bay. Of course, others can join your bay at the high-top tables where you can order from the bar and an innovative menu—think injectable donut holes.
While you can certainly bring your own clubs, Topgolf offers an assortment of men’s and women’s clubs to use for free, even those suited for the left-handed. At Topgolf, anyone can play, no matter the skill level, and games are customizable to be as competitive as you wish. “It's all for fun whether you play or don't play,” Randy, a Topgolf associate says. Choose from different game modes, like Signature, which is the most popular because any target is up for hitting. Other modes are color-coded, which increase in difficulty and distance depending on the mode. There’s just one rule at Topgolf: No Happy Gilmores.
My favorite part about Topgolf? There’s no hushing required. It’s a lively spot where it’s OK to be loud when it’s tee time, and heels are accepted. Grey Young, Topgolf’s Membership Director and Hospitality Manager, tells us, “I’ve seen some women in heels hit better than some men.”
Topgolf is located at 5444 Greenwich Rd., Virginia Beach. Hours: Sunday–Thursday 9 a.m.–midnight and Friday–Saturday 9 a.m.–2 a.m. More info here.
